(GSM Insider) - Corning Gorilla Glass 2 vs AGC Dragontrail - Which One Better For Mobile Devices?
Gorilla Glass from Corning should be popular among smartphone and tablet users. Samsung Galaxy S3, HTC One X and Nokia Lumia 920 are among the devices that using the Gorilla Glass. But Corning is not the only company that supplies the display for mobile devices. Japanese company AGC is the world's second largest glass maker. Asahi Glass Co. is the full name of AGC.
Its ok if you never heard of the AGC because the Gorilla Glass is definitely more popular. Recently, AGC released a new durable glass for mobile devices which is known as the AGC Dragonrail glass. Corning has the powerful gorilla but AGC has the dragon.
The AGC Dragontrail glass was made from the aluminium silicate enhanced glass while the Corning Gorilla Glass 2 was made from soda-lime glass. Basically, the materials between both glass are truly different.
Dragontrail glass is six times harder than the normal soda-lime glass while the Gorilla Glass 2 is five times harder. Dragontrail glass supported 60kg of pressure while Gorilla Glass 2 supported 55kg of pressure only. These clearly reflected that the Dragontrail is better than the Gorilla Glass 2.
The display of Sony Xperia Z, ZTE Nubia Z5, XiaoMi Phone 2 and Samsung Galaxy Nexus were made from the AGC Dragontrail glass. There were reports stated that iPad 2 was made from AGC Dragontrail and Corning Gorilla Glass 2.
The Dragontrail is same level with the Gorilla Glass 2. But Corning already launched the Gorilla Glass 3 at the CES 2013. The Gorilla Glass 3 features Native Damage Resistance technology as it has 40% lesser scratches and 40% more durable. So AGC need to introduce new Dragontrail to compete with the Gorilla Glass 3.
